Markdown to EPUB

Markdown to EPUB, with your typography intact

bukpress exports a Markdown manuscript as a reflowable EPUB that carries your typefaces, colours and heading styles, with your uploaded artwork as the book's native cover. It reads correctly on Kindle, Apple Books, Kobo and anything else that isn't paper — and the same file exports as a print-ready PDF at the same time.

How to convert

Markdown to EPUB in three steps

1

Write once, in Markdown

The same file produces both formats. Your headings become the book's structure, so the EPUB is navigable rather than one long scroll.

2

Design the book

Typefaces, sizes, colours and heading rules carry into the EPUB; cover artwork you upload becomes the file's native cover image.

3

Export EPUB alongside the PDF

EPUB export is on the Pro plan. Queue it and the reflowable file lands in your exports next to the print-ready PDF.

What a reflowable EPUB actually means

A PDF has fixed pages: page seven is page seven on a phone, a laptop and a printing press, which is exactly what you want for something that will be printed or handed out. An EPUB has no pages until it is opened — the text reflows to the screen and the type size the reader chose, so a book read on a phone at large type is not a PDF being pinched and dragged.

What survives that reflow is the design decisions that aren't about position: your typefaces, your colours, and the rules that make a chapter heading look like a chapter heading. That is what bukpress carries into the file, so an EPUB you export still looks like your book rather than the reading app's default.

Where the file works

EPUB is the format the ebook world agreed on. A file exported from bukpress opens in Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books and the other major readers, and can be sent to a Kindle. If you are publishing to a store, EPUB is almost always the file it asks for.
