Ebook creator: which one for the ebook you actually have

The right ebook creator depends on what the ebook is. For a short designed PDF like a lead magnet, Canva is the fastest route. For a long text manuscript going to Kindle and the stores, you need something that exports a reflowable EPUB rather than a fixed PDF. Canva cannot do that. For an illustrated or heavily laid-out book, a design application is the honest answer. Most disappointment comes from using a PDF design tool for a book that needed to reflow.

"Ebook creator" covers two products that are barely related: something that designs a short, fixed-layout PDF, and something that produces a reflowable ebook a Kindle will accept. Picking from the wrong half is the most common reason the result is unusable, and it is usually discovered at upload.

If your job is specifically typesetting a finished manuscript for print and the stores, book formatting software is the more precise list. This page is the wider question.

First decide: fixed or reflowable

Fixed layout (PDF)Reflowable (EPUB)
Looks the same everywhereYesNo, and that is correct
Reader can change the type sizeNoYes
Works on a KindlePoorlyYes
Right forLead magnets, workbooks, illustrated guidesNovels, non-fiction, anything long
Sold on AmazonNoYes

A 40-page PDF on a phone is a pinch-and-zoom exercise, which is why stores want EPUB for text-led books. A reflowable file, meanwhile, will not hold a designed page. EPUB or PDF, and why you probably want both covers the cases where the answer is both.

Get this wrong and no tool rescues it: converting a designed PDF into an EPUB afterwards produces exactly the disappointment described in PDF to EPUB.

Canva is the honest answer for a short designed ebook, and it is worth being clear about its ceiling: it exports PDF, not EPUB, so it cannot produce a Kindle book. Canva for books is the detailed version.

Designrr converts existing content (blog posts, documents) into a laid-out ebook. Useful when the writing already exists, which is the same idea as turning a blog archive into a book.

Reedsy Studio is free and produces genuinely clean PDF and EPUB, provided you write inside their editor.

Calibre is a converter rather than a creator, and it is the best one there is. What Calibre does well, and where it stops covers it properly.

Sigil edits EPUB directly. Not a first tool, and the right one when an ebook needs surgery, often after an EPUB is rejected.

What "free" tends to cost

Free ebook creators are real and mostly good. The costs are consistent and worth knowing in advance:

  • Watermarks and export limits on some free tiers, usually revealed at the end.
  • Lock-in to their editor, meaning your manuscript lives in their account.
  • PDF only, which quietly removes the stores from your options.
  • No EPUB validation, so the file fails at upload rather than at export.

None of those make a free tool the wrong choice for a lead magnet. All of them matter for a book you intend to sell.

The cover is a separate job

Almost no ebook creator makes a good cover, and a cover is the single most visible thing about the book. Sizes differ by store and a cover that looks right in one place is cropped in another: ebook cover sizes that work in every store covers the dimensions, and a print edition also needs spine width and bleed.

Where bukpress fits

bukpress sits in the second half of the table: a Markdown manuscript in, a typeset PDF and a reflowable EPUB out, from the same source.

That is the specific problem it solves: not designing a page, but keeping one manuscript and two formats in step. A correction is one edit and one rebuild, and both files change together. There is no visual designer and no template gallery, so for a lead magnet with a designed cover page, Canva is the better recommendation and the two do not overlap much.

The controls are deliberately few: three typefaces with their own sizes and colours, margins in points, line height, and the paper colour. Pages are A4. The sample book shows what comes out, and if you want the whole route from draft to store, from Markdown draft to published book walks it, and then how to deliver an ebook to the people who buy it covers what happens after.

Common questions

What is the best free ebook creator?

Canva for a short designed PDF, Reedsy Studio for a full-length book needing both PDF and EPUB, and Calibre for converting between formats. All three are genuinely free.

Can I create an ebook in Canva?

Yes, and it is a good choice for lead magnets and workbooks. It exports PDF only, so it cannot produce the reflowable EPUB that Kindle and most stores require.

What format should an ebook be in?

EPUB for anything text-led that you intend to sell, because it reflows to the reader's screen and type size. PDF for short, designed documents meant to be read as laid out.

Do I need an ISBN for an ebook?

Not on Amazon, which assigns its own identifier. Some other stores require one, and it matters if you want the book catalogued under your own imprint. Do you need an ISBN covers the cases.

Can an AI ebook generator write my book?

It can produce a draft quickly. Structure, accuracy and editing remain yours, and unedited AI output reads like unedited AI output.

Canva for books: what it is good at, and where it stops

Use Canva for the cover, for a one-page lead sheet, and for any document that is really a designed poster with a few sisters. Do not use it to typeset a book. Past a couple of dozen pages you are doing frame-by-frame layout with no manuscript underneath, and every edit becomes a layout job.

EPUB or PDF: how to choose, and why you probably want both

Use PDF when the page is fixed and matters: print, handouts, workbooks, anything with a layout the reader must see as you set it. Use EPUB when the text should adapt to the reader's screen and type size, which is every e-reader and almost every ebook store.

How to make a lead magnet PDF people actually finish

Keep it under about fifteen pages, make the first page deliver something useful on its own, structure it so it can be skimmed in ninety seconds, and produce it properly: a document that looks like a word-processor export undermines the expertise it is meant to demonstrate.

bukpress turns the file you are already writing into a typeset PDF and EPUB: your type, your covers, no watermark on any plan.
